"Yesterday was a big day for the Museum's F2G-1D, Super Corsair (there are only 3.5 F2Gs left in the world). Not since the bird was pulled out of the storage container forty plus years ago, has the wings been in the folded position. We finished the installation of the LH wing yesterday afternoon after a lot of pushing and pulling. The wing weighs in at over 650 pounds and this version of the Corsair did not have a hydraulic wing fold mechanism. After about an hour of a lot of muscle, Tom's steady hand on the forklift, the wing was attached and secured. In the coming weeks, the F2G-1D will be taken outside to have its wings lowered, the control surfaces reattached, then back into the hangar. The plan is to have the engine cowling painted in a white checkerboard pattern per one of the early photos we have of an F2G-1D." -Jim |
